With its chronograph function and iconic flight slide rule, the Navitimer had become an indispensable tool in the cockpit, but space missions have their own unique requirements. Before the mission, Carpenter wrote to Breitling requesting a specially modified Navitimer. His requirements included: a wider bezel for easier operation while wearing gloves; a flexible metal bracelet so the watch could be worn while wearing a spacesuit; and most notably, a 24-hour display. In orbit where sunrise and sunset occur every 90 minutes, this 24-hour display would allow him to keep accurate time.

This was a challenge that Willy Breitling, the third generation of Breitling's heir, could not refuse, and the final result was the Navitimer Cosmonaute. Delivered just days before launch, this watch became the first Swiss wristwatch to travel into space.
